Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1

Ava's POV

"Sweety, get up! Time for school", mom shouted from the living room and I groaned. Today would be my first day attending Dune High. Mom and I just moved to Dune City where she got a new job and I had to change schools. We've been living here for about a month now but I don't even know my way around. Heck, I don't even leave the house!

I lazily got up and hit the showers. After a few minutes, I stepped out with a bathrobe to cover myself. I did everything with the speed of light and wore a black crop top and blue denim jean cargo pants before styling my jet-black hair into two feed-in braids and based on the length,it got to my waist.

I put on my Air Jordan sneakers and did my usual simple makeup: mascara, eyeliner and lipgloss. I love my natural beauty.

I checked myself out in my full-length mirror and smiled, I was I was looking great. I applied my signature cologne before grabbing amy backpack that was loaded with necessities: charger, airpods, lipgloss, lip balm, water bottle, pencil case. I head downstairs with my phone in my hand.

"Good morning, mom", I kissed her cheeks.

"Good morning, butterfly", she kissed my cheeks.

My mom, Daniella Grey, ambitious but single. She isn't my real mom, though, she just took me in two days after I was born.

"I see someone is dressed to impress", mom teased.

"What's for breakfast?", I ignored her tease.

"Well, I didn't have enough time to cook so I made cereal, now hurry up so you won't be late", she said with a serious tone.

"Yeah, I know", I started eating my bowl of cereal.

After a few minutes, mom and I were ready to go.

"Wait for me beside the car, let me grab my keys", she said and I obeyed.

She came back later, and we got in. She drove me to school.

When we arrived at Dune High and damn!! The place was dope. Huge parking lot, beautiful architecture. My jaw practically dropped. I thought it was gonna be a little bit smaller compared to my old school.

"Sweetie, aren't you gonna get down?", mom snapped me out of my thoughts.

" I will", I responded carrying my backpack.

" Butterfly, make friends, okay. You know I want you to have fun"

" I know, mom", mom has been encouraging me to have friends but I'm not sure I want to. Can you imagine she asked me if I had a boyfriend or a crush when I turned 15. Thing is, she wants me to be in a relationship, unlike other moms, how are strict

Now, I love her the way she is, don't get me wrong but sometimes I wish she'll cut it down a bit.

" I love you ", I kissed her cheeks.

" Love you too, don't forget to give me the full gossip when you get home, okay?"

" Yes, mom. You know, sometimes I wonder if you're a teenager ", I teased and she chuckled.

" Just go", she playfully pushed me out of the car.

" See you later ", I waved her goodbye and she drove off.

I looked around for sometime before going in.

I navigated my way to the principal's office and collected my schedule.

I walked into my first class, Home Economics, but it was a bit empty, well, except for a girl, sitting at the end of the class.

I walked towards her and sat beside her.

"Hey",she chirped.

"Hey", I smiled.

"I'm Rachel"

"Ava"

"You new here?"

"Yeah, you?"

"Yeah, but my boyfriend has been attending this school so I know the pros and cons"

"Guess I'll learn from you then. Friends?", I stretched out my hand for a handshake and she accepted.

"Friends"

We chatted for a few minutes before the class got filled up and then it hit me.

A masculine cologne.....

Lavender fragrance....

Then I felt a pair of eyes on me but I didn't know who it was or where the person was.

The teacher walked in and it was time for introductions. Everyone did theirs and it was my turn.

When I got up, I could hear whispers and wolf whistles from the guys. I knew the reason.

"Hey, everyone, I'm Ava Grey", I said, still self-conscious about the kind of stares I was getting.

An hour later...

"That would be all", the teacher rounded up the class and left.

"Are you having another class?", Rachel asked, as I stood up from my seat.

"Yes, math, you?"

"Same", she squealed.

" Let's go then", I said, hooking my hand in hers, and we left for the class.

It turned out that we had all our classes together and I was thankful for that.

Lunchtime....

" Are you heading to the cafeteria?", Rachel asked with a smile.

" Nah, I'm gonna find my way to the bleachers", I shrugged.

" Why?", she inquired.

" I don't like crowded places, I feel uneasy"

" Have you tried eating in a cafeteria before?"

" Once and I didn't like it"

" How about you give this one a try"

" Are you sure?"

" Definitely, besides, trying new things is the spice of life"

" I've never heard that, but okay", I gave in and went with her to the cafeteria.

It was even bigger than I imagined. It was spacious and comfortable. Rachel and I grabbed a table and began eating our lunch.

I could feel a pair of eyes on me but I ignored it.

" So where's your boyfriend anyways?", I asked cos she hasn't introduced me to him yet.

" He had a family gathering so he had to skip school", she replied with a sad face.

" Oh, I see. Tell me about him", I said trying to lighten the mood.

" He's cute and caring. Not to brag but he's the best", she chirped.

"Awwwwwwwnnn", we laughed.

"How about you? Anyone special?", she wiggled her brows.

"Nah"

"Why? I mean, you're really beautiful, smart, drop dead gorgeous and hot, so why?"

"I don't know, I'm not just really interested in relationships"

"Don't say that! Maybe you haven't found the one yet"

"Maybe", I said and just then, there was a microphone feedback.

"Attention, students of Dune High, it's Principal Hastings speaking. I wanna announce to all of you that there is gonna be a Welcome party for both the new and old students this Friday. The theme is freestyle, we couldn't actually pick one. Also tryouts for all activities have begun. Do well to participate as it will be recorded in your report card. Thank you!", as soon as the principal said this, the whole cafeteria erupted with cheers.
