It has been said that absolute power corrupts absolutely . And there has been evidence of this throughout the course of history.
There have been stories of people who rose to power quickly immediately switching character and becoming a more debased version of theirselves.
Humans for a long time have always been a fallen race that prided self survival and self gain over all . No matter who as long as the person has enough to stand alone,he or she most times forget their roots. Children disappearing immediately they find self reliance, wives cheating on their husbands with much more successful men and husbands who abandon their families out of spite.
It has been no debate that humans are selfish creatures, even some religious books calls out humans as their hearts were full of evil.
Now what happens when a selfish warmongering species evolve by accident.
December 27th 1050 a.d just as the first crusades were reaching its peak , something happened that would change history forever.
" Ahllahu ahkbar , death to the infidels ." An Arabian Calvary commander shouted on top of his voice as he led his men to clash with the crusading Calvary. This was a battle between Christianity and Islam for the right to occupy Jerusalem.
But before they could clash something mysterious happened. They could see from above , a giant asteroid falling at an incredible pace , one could even say it was the size of the moon.
As it fell, a storm was brewing and majority of the people on earth could see it falling, it was ominous.
People had started to say their goodbyes to families and loved ones , soldiers on the battlefield feild stood side by side with their enemies in silence waiting to be crushed to death by this giant rock . But they were not crushed, instead like a twist of fate , a bolt of lightning struck the asteroid as it fell causing a reaction that made it shatter and explode into millions of pieces, sending a shockwave of energy and debris throughout the entire earth.
Death still came but it was not as it would have been before. So people buried their dead and enemies went back to war just like it had been before.
Ten years later, humanity started seeing minor changes. People were getting stronger and faster than what was usually the case . Once in a while there would be a case of someone exhibiting extraordinary abilities like shooting flames from the hand or healing the sick .
But humans always feared what they didn't understand, so they started persecuting those with abilities.
For some time it worked but soon these ability weilders found out that there was no need to be afraid, their numbers has grown over a long period of time and they had found out that they were many times stronger than humans.
A regular mage ( as they were called) without training was as strong as ten humans without adding their ability. Well trained mages with great abilities could as well shatter an army of one thousand men.
So when the mages noticed how strong they were, they fought back and they fought hard and eventually, they subjugated the regular humans and defeated their oppressors.
Soon they were the ones on top , they toppled monarchs and took over kingdoms and empires as their new lords and establishing their dynasties across the earth.
The earth was now ruled by the strong and the weak had no choice but to submit.
But centuries later in the early to late 1400s something happened.
Strange portals called gates opened up across several locations in the world and monsters controlled by demons poured out into the world and they caused chaos, devouring humans as they went.
But soon human would come to see the monsters and their gates as a blessing to be taken with a pinch of salt.
They discovered that the blood of these monsters could be used in making healing tonics and potions, their bones could be forged into weapons and their cores could be used to increase magic power.
So humans did what they did best , they began hunting their hunters , raiding the gates for resources and soon enough pushed back the demons and their monsters to some extent.
And like clockwork, they began fighting theirselves over resources and rights to these gates where they found all manner of treasure that they exploited .
Humanity had found its footing once more but innovation was stagnant except for magic , architecture and fashion. There was no industrial revolution as people now relied on magic extensively and it created a caste system.
The mages were in top, they had the choice jobs , they were attended to immediately in every establishment that they went to and they were almost untouchable.
The regular humans were bottom of the barrel, they mostly worked as servants and labourers, the ones that could make it had to attach theirselves to the hip of a powerful mage and ride their coattails as maybe a butler or as a personal servant.
Even among the mages , there were differences. You see the world was now controlled by clans, families and sects who controlled various areas in the world both legal and in the underworld and a mages prestige were based on two things, power and your clan.
Another great power figure was religion, one would think that gaining great power would make people abandon religion but fortunately religion still existed , it was the only thing keeping the clans , families and sects in check .
But even with all their conflicts and power struggles, humans all had one goal in common , so common that even new born babies were trained for this , their goal was to eradicate the world of demons and monsters forever.
No matter how bad humans were, the demons were worse , they stripped the land bare of all life they find , they even corrupt humans to commit inconceivable atrocities and the worse part is that they don't do it out of necessity or out of duty , they ravage for their self pleasure.
Humans were selfish, but the demons were the embodiment of selfishness.
