Chapter 11 - A Glimpse Of The Past

The task force trudged through the Wastes, the horizon marked by the smoldering ruins of a Lunari village. The air carried the acrid scent of charred wood and despair, the Void Plague's devastation laid bare in the collapsed homes and lifeless streets. Kael and Liora led the team, their duel's aftermath lingering as a tense silence between them, though their eyes occasionally met with a new, unreadable intensity.

As they explored, Liora's steps faltered near a toppled shrine, its crescent emblem half-buried in ash. Her composure cracked, her silver eyes glistening with unshed tears. "This was my home," she whispered, her voice breaking. "My family… my brother… they died here when I was a child. I swore to protect what's left." Her obsession with her people's survival spilled out, raw and unguarded, drawing the team's attention.

Kael froze, his hand tightening on his sword. The weight of her words struck a chord, stirring memories of his own loss. He stepped closer, his voice low. "I lost my sister to a border skirmish. She was young… I couldn't save her. I've fought to prove myself ever since." The admission was brief, a rare glimpse into the wound that drove him, mirroring Liora's pain.

Liora turned, her gaze locking with his, searching for sincerity. "So we're both haunted," she said, her tone bitter but softened. The shared revelation hung between them, a fragile thread connecting their obsessions. The team watched, sensing the shift, but neither Kael nor Liora acknowledged it further.

They moved on, the village's ruins fading behind them, but the moment lingered. Kael's jaw tightened, his mind replaying her words, while Liora's hand brushed her dagger, her resolve strengthened yet shaken. Their hatred remained, but beneath it, a flicker of understanding began to take root, born from the ashes of their pasts.
