Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: Flashback

"Lynx, I'll be heading out in a bit"

Lynx's eyes slowly flutter open, as he sat up from laying down looking around, he felt no pain or anything, and he felt as if he was there but in a body he had no control over. It was his memory. As the flashback played fresh before his eyes he remembered a man, a man who he called Dad. His father would leave their home and would venture out leaving him behind. He was tall and a bit skinny looking with a lot of scars over his body and was called Lyron. He would leave and when he returned he was normally covered in bruises sometimes bleeding. Lynx didn't like the sight of his father returning with scars and so he would beg his father to let him accompany him so he could help and also protect him. His father would laugh at his willingness, Lyron normally told beautiful stories, but when Lynx asked to venture out he told him horrifying stories, but Lynx was still adamant, he wouldn't change his mind. He did indeed have gotten scared but when he saw the scars on his father he was ready to venture out again and soon the stories meant nothing to him. Lyron knew he couldn't stop Lynx and so he promised that when Lynx turn five he would allow him to accompany him to the outside. Lynx was overjoyed that he was finally allowed to visit the outside, that same day he prepared himself too excited to fall asleep the night. Lynx always stayed home and would watch his father leave and return after hours, he played with his toys that he was given to occupy his thoughts and stayed by the ladder waiting for his father to return with the stories he would bring back. Lynx always obeyed his father and never left home since his father told him not to. Everyday he would watch his father climb up the ladder and would wait there awaiting for his father's return. Lyron gave bittersweet smiles knowing what his expression will be when he see the world outside.

The night Lyron turned on the bed on his side and shed a small tear, while Lynx was happy and smiling in his sleep. The world outside was not something Lyron wanted Lynx to see, but Lynx was growing and so was his curiosity and he thought it was best for him to know the truth, because one day he might not make it home and if he didn't Lynx might live alone without knowing anything; to him Lynx was far too young and innocent to witness the cruel world that laid above their door, but he shouldn't be selfish. The day arrived and Lynx was finally five, he woke up gathered his tools and got ready himself bouncing with excitement, his father didn't know what to say and only smiled. Lyron then climbed up the ladder and Lynx followed slowly behind him. When they were at the small barrier covering over their door Lyron looked through the spaces and the area was clear. He walked out as Lynx followed smiling ear to ear, but as he stepped into the open his smile faded within a second. His father only stood there with his back turned to Lynx daring not to meet his eyes. Lynx stood there frozen silently and looked around, a slight breeze then brushed against his face and it was like he woke up and looked at his father.

"Hey dad, where are we?" lynx asked in a low voice.

"We're outside, make no mistake Lynx. This is the world we live in" Lyron said as he turned facing Lynx's eyes.

"But, what happened to the giant trees and tall mountains and green grass that you mentioned in your stories. Was it all a lie?" Lynx spoke while stuttering obviously lost in his mind.

"My stories are true, but the world I described was our world a very, very long time ago" They stood there in silence for a moment and then Lyron spoke up.

"Do you want to head back inside?" Lyron asked in a calm tone but lynx only shook his head, he came out to help and protect his father so he wouldn't turn away now, if he did his father would return home bleeding again.

Lyron didn't take Lynx anywhere dangerous even though everywhere was dangerous, but it was safe to say there were a few places safer than most and Monsters were hardly in those areas. Lyron walked with him to nearby places as they collected whatever materials they thought would be of use. Lynx was mostly quiet on their journey and Lyron could understand why. Everywhere they went Lynx only saw the same thing over and over, everything was destroyed, the place was misty, forgotten and the unleveled ground beneath his feet and a unfamiliar smell swept across his nostrils from time to time. In the distance he could hear snapping and crackling sounds, but just like his father he did his best to avoid it. Soon they went back home and Lynx silently placed down the things he gathered and sat down on the floor, Lyron read his face and he could tell that Lynx was processing everything. Lynx was always in a happy mood even though he knew they had difficulties, but the stories his father brought back made him forget everything. Lyron also taught Lynx the few thing he knew and Lynx was happy to learn, he mostly taught Lynx how to construct things from the materials they gathered and Lynx was always happy to learn. Lynx's mood was now normally in a low mood after he saw the outside world and he didn't know how to react to it.

Days pass and Lynx hadn't return to his joyful self, but then one day Lynx woke up before his father and got ready to head outside and when he was finish he sat down waiting for his father to wake up. Lyron eyes blinked open and was surprised to see Lynx all geared up and was ready to leave, he didn't know what to say, but Lynx was no longer sad he looked ready. They both went out and Lynx observed and took note of everything that Lyron did. Lynx had adapted to the world outside and was ready to face it and that made Lyron happy seeing him in a good mood again. They made their way to a garbage hill with Lyron in lead, the garbage hill was said to be a safe one. It didn't have much loot but it was one of the safest place he could bring Lynx. As they were making their way to the garbage hill Lyron then spotted someone and within seconds he grabbed Lynx and ducked behind a large boulder that was laying nearby. It was the Skylanders and Lyron knew he had to avoid them at all cost, he didn't understand why they were there since it was the first time seeing them in the area, but for whatever reasons they were there it wasn't a good one. The Skylanders then sensed someone hiding and called out for them to show themselves, Lyron felt his heart beating in his chest faster than his brain could process. With the threatening voice one of the Skylander used it was a fact they knew someone was hiding and Lyron knew there was no use staying quiet.

"Stay" Lyron told Lynx in a low demanding voice and Lynx nodded.

Lyron walked from his hiding spot with his hands held up, as he got closer he saw other people who were kneeling. There were three Skylanders in their Robotic form and two other in their human form. As Lyron got closer the Skylanders smirked and the people kneeling only looked to the ground while others started crying, they knew exactly what would become of him. Even though Lyron told Lynx to stay he was slowly making his way forward and remained undetected. Lynx wanted to see what would happen, he was finally close enough and could see everything, but the people kneeling puzzled him, he couldn't understand what was happening.

As Lyron walked over to the Skylanders Lynx watched closely and kept his eyes on his father, as Lyron was close enough the Skylanders in their Robotic form picked him up and then to everyone's horror they flung him back to the ground. The people kneeling squeezed their eyes shut trembling in fear, Lynx who was hiding was frozen to his core as his eyes widen in horror as the scene played before him. Lyron was bleeding and a few bones were broken, he tried standing but it was no use. One of the Skylanders then picked him up and threw him to one of his teammate and then the teammate used his hand as a bat and swatted him. Lyron body twirled in the air as he was slapped away and then he landed with a crumbling heavy thud. The Skylanders laughed amongst themselves enjoying what they did and then someone spoke and broke their laughter.

"Why? Why are you doing this to us?" a woman asked with a shaky pleading voice. The Skylanders stopped laughing and looked at her.

"Why you ask, because we can" he answered in a delightful and superior tone.

"You're all just in the way" as the Skylander spoke his teammate in his Robotic form kick her at full force, the blood splashed on the people that were closest to her and her blood pattered from above as her upper half got kicked away. She was long dead before her body hit the ground, only the lower part of her remained as blood spreaded around her remains. The other people kneeling started praying and crying even louder.

"You scum, rats, bottom feeders, bastards, good for nothing, insects" with each insult thrown someone was killed brutally. They stumped on them, threw them, kick them killing them one after the other. The area they were at was a place many people went to collect materials and now it was a playground, a playground for the Skylanders. As they were about to kill the last person one of them watch started beeping signaling it was time to go home, but before they went back they took up the woman and squeezed her to death within their hands and dropped her remains on the ground.

"Disgusting"

The Robotic people then walked away and soon flew off and the area was left in a still, silent, bloody atmosphere. Lynx slowly crept from hiding with a terrifying look pasted onto his face, he slowly made his way to where he saw his father body landed. Lynx walked with shaky knees, trembling hands and a drumming heart. He called out to his father but the sounds escaped his mouth as a mere whisper.

"Dad" as Lynx kept calling for his father his throat tighten, but in his head he was calling out to his father desperately.

When Lynx finally reached where his father body was it was enough to traumatize a grown man and leave him vomiting. Lynx stood there looking down on his father's body that had bones broken all over as they plugged and stuck out from beneath his skin and his body laid in an unnatural position, Lyron looked unrecognizable, but even though his face was smashed in with bones sticking out and bleeding, Lynx knew deep down and was very sure it was his father.
