Earlier that day
Ashley woke up to find breakfast already set before her on the bed.
"You didn't eat last night. You must be hungry after everything," Lorenzo said as he settled beside her.
She blushed, knowing exactly what he meant. She hadn't thought she'd get any sleep last night with all that was happening, but Lorenzo had worn her out. Eventually, sleep came, and for that, she was grateful. She felt more energized now.
He encouraged her to eat the sandwich and sip the hot tea. Even though her appetite was still off, her body felt hungry. She also needed the strength to get through the day.
Her daughter. She was going to see her daughter today.
The thought made her stomach twist. She had played out the reunion a hundred times in her mind during the night—when she and Lorenzo weren't tangled up in each other. She had even dreamed about her. And for once, it wasn't a nightmare. It was soft, warm—a dream of hugs and laughter and a bond she could feel.
