Charles opened the door to his office, expecting silence—maybe the usual stillness of documents waiting to be signed. Instead, he froze in the doorway.
William stood near the desk, holding an envelope in his hand. His expression was one of curiosity, and his fingers were halfway through opening it.
"What are you doing?" Charles asked sharply, his voice rising with alarm as he rushed forward. He snatched the envelope from William's hands. "Please—don't go through my things like that."
William blinked, caught off guard, then gave a nervous, almost guilty smile. "Sorry… I was just curious. But fine. I won't touch anything if you don't want to tell me what's going on."
Charles sighed, his shoulders lowering slightly. "Thank you," he said, more gently this time.
William nodded and picked up the book he had originally come for from the desk. Without another word, he turned and walked out of the office.
