"Hey. That's okay," I said gently. "You can always talk to him another time. There's no pressure, Maxi. There's no countdown clock."
"I know." Her voice was small, but already cracking at the edges. "I know, it's just…"
A long silence pulsed in as I walked out of the room.
"Just what girl?" I asked.
There was another delay, then her words burst out like a dam breaking.
"What if he doesn't like me, Kyra? I mean....he said it before. That he didn't want anything more. That he doesn't see me that way. So what am I doing?"
Her audio spiked again. My HUD flashed a soft orange. Tears.
"This girl was probably crying in public over a man?" I thought to myself as my face was filled with visible disgust. "ughhh, can never be me."
I paused. The air-conditioning made a soft whoosh above me, but the room felt still.
"Maxi…"
