Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Absurd Fantasies

'I can't take my job anymore.' Cassie mused as she barreled down the hall till she reached the far end of it. Frisking her body, she realized that she had forgotten the keys inside.

'Ugh!' She was on the third floor and making the trip but to the ground floor to get the spare to her room sounded like a drag from the landlord. She wasn't on good terms with him despite her rent already dealt with, it was simply a dissonance that she had with others.

As her mind was on teetering on the verge of heading down to the landlord or wait a bit, her door was opened for her to which she found rather bothering but seeing Andrew being the one doing it, rather than shock, it was a slight sigh.

"Let me guess, you already knew that I'd forget my keys or something." She mused as she made her way inside before realizing the changes that had been done to her apartment. It was neater and fully arranged, something that would have taken ages done.

Overtime she found it too much of a bother to get it done herself thus she let it all come to ruin but seeing it how it was, it felt like a breathe of fresh air. "You do know that I can file a report of breaking and entering, right?"

Her tone condescending however Andrew brushed it off as he brought out cookies that he had baked. They looked delicious coupled with the cold tall glass of milk. "I'm sorry but that's it! Why? Why bother yourself to do all of this for me?"

Sure she was greatful but even she could feel that he was pushing it a tad. "My mother told me that I should help others regardless of how they treat me." His tone flat as he brought another glass of milk before taking a seat next to her.

He crashed into the sofa however by the look on her face, she could feel that that wasn't it.

"I can already tell that you're not satisfied with that. The actual truth is that is I'm bored out of my mind with this excuse slide of motions called life. The banal madness driving me mad but what is the point of suicide if it will bring grief to those around me."

Cassie found this answer even more absurd than the prior. "Do you expect me to believe that? Besides what does even mean the banality of your life?" Andrew took a glance at the lady beside him. "This isn't the first or the second time that you've asked that question. Actually I can't even recall how many times I've heard you say that."

"What I mean is that I already know what is going to happen. Every outcome, every answer to every problem except the one that plagues me and everything that the human race has accomplished or will accomplish. Every second of my life feels like it has been on loop with every new thought that creeps into my mind feeling more of the same."

"How do you think I knew that you forgot your keys or how I knew that you would attempt suicide to begin with? It has been more than just pure luck or coincidence. It had been insanity and I'll lose myself at this rate."

Cassie looked at Andrew like a schizophrenic maniac, as if whether he comprehended the words that came out of his lips. "You have anemia due to you donating your blood for money explaining your frail figure." Taken aback by what he had stated, she squinted her eyes as she backed away from him.

"Wait! How-What?!" That was something she personally knew this for him to know that would mean that he had done a full investigation into her life or he was actually telling the truth. "And for that there should be some medication right at the counter."

He added as she trailed her eyes to the kitchen counter to see a set of containers entailing her prescribed medication for her condition. She was in disbelief of what she had just heard. 'But wait! If he has such a skill then why doesn't he use it to his advantage?'

Recalling how average he is not only in a variety of areas, ranging from academics to sports and all that, it didn't make sense as to why he made the choice that he did. 'Or does he have some other-'

"I can't feel anything, remember. So even if I did all that what would be the point? No sense of accomplishment, sure it would help but how out of hand do you think this situation would get if more people came to know about this? Not to mention, wouldn't that be cheating?"

Hearing what he said, it came to make sense. "If yu can't feel anything, then why are you here? You won't feel anything from saving me or watching me die so why take the initiative and save me?" He gave a light sigh as he glanced at his arm. "I thought that was what is humans prioritized first, human life at all costs."

'But it's quite clear that that isn't your motive either. That would be driven by the passion to care and feeling. The need to save and protect others, the need that you lack.' The more she applied her brains to this, the less sense it came to be in the end.

"I fantasize about losing my humanity all together or regaining it wholly but this neutral ground that I've fallen in between is mind numbing." He placed his hand down callously as he looked at the television before turning it on.

She tried to calm herself down after what she has been told but it would take a while to digest it all. "Maybe you being at the tournament could help you in getting some sunlight." Cassie couldn't help but feel patronized.

It felt that he was using his 'burden' to antagonize her as much as he could and the worst part is that she couldn't tell whether it was intentional or not. "I think that telling others about your 'gift' is obviously not ideal but why would you tell me about it to begin with. I'm just some random girl in your life."

"Why? It's not like there's guilt on my chest if I don't. To test whether I'd feel something or be free from this purgatory but it would seem that I was right." Like hysteria falling to a man trapped in a cage, trying the impossible to get out despite knowing in his sober state that it was futile.

It's not like he could experiment and rely on luck to escape but he knew that it was futile. Regardless of how he looked at it. "I- I appreciate it despite it being illogical to choose me." Cassie mused as she finally relaxed onto the couch.

She would ask him questions as to what would happen next and without fail, they would just like he had predicted. He brought out his phone before sending a message to hers.

Glancing at the message, she was filled with all kinds of emotions. The message entailed a set of numbers but what made her crazed with it was that it was the numbers for the lottery. All the various lucky numbers not only for the month but for the next years as well.

"Try it." He urged to which she did and shortly after, a call rang to her that she had won the grand prize. It all felt like a dream, to think that there would come a time that she would win five million dollars just like that.

She tried this with other companies as well and the result was the same however even she knew that such wasn't a long term plan. Her winning every jackpot out of the blue would no doubt rouse suspicions thus she did this for two betting companies which amassed her a total of ten million dollars.

Of course she would have to claim the money later on at the respective companies but even so, she still couldn't believe what was going in her life. 'I can finally quit that stupid job!' She mused as she thought all the things that she would do with that kind of money before looking back at Andrew.

He wasn't excited, not happy, even a smile couldn't be traced on his face but rather pure indifference to what had happened to her. 'What a cruel joke it must be!' She concluded. It wasn't the fact that he hadn't tried his luck but given that he already knew what the numbers were, he would have done the same but he didn't.

Either he lacked the allure of money or he already had a fortune waiting for him. Either way being highly plausible but impossible for her to deduce. "Don't bother thanking me." His tone lacking satire, his signature as he rose to his feet.

"Wait! You're leaving?!" Once more taken aback that he was leaving so suddenly. The first time understandable but now, how could he leave so casually as if she hadn't won a fortune out of the blue. She felt that she had to repay his actions somehow.

"I know that you don't have the allure of money but I'm sure that I can pay you somehow. Maybe I can..." She fell silent realizing that she was completely clueless as to what to give him back.

'He can tell what will happen and every variation of it. It's not like he would need or lack money as he would have done the same or other means. What do you give a person who can't feel anything or has the means to get what he wants?'

"Thanks for your efforts but seeing you at the tournament will suffice. And I'm not leaving, just checking whether the turkey's done." As if on cue, the timer went off and checked the over and brought out a gold roast turkey.
