Chapter 41 - It Doesn’t Hurt Anymore

Rachel froze, never expecting that the place where she first met him was also where his father had died.

"I'm sorry," she said softly.

"My father's death was his own doing. You don't need to apologize," Jeffrey replied in a low voice.

"His own doing?" Rachel was surprised. She hadn't expected him to describe his father's death that way.

"Isn't it? He fell in love with someone he shouldn't have. When she found out he was no longer useful, even begging on his knees didn't help. In the end, he died alone in the snow, broken and hopeless." Jeffrey's tone was calm, like he was talking about something normal.

His voice was steady, just like usual.

But there was this feeling of loneliness around him, making Rachel feel like she was seeing him for the first time all over again.

"Jeffrey," she called his name gently.

He looked up, his dark eyes reflecting her face. "Do you think his death was his own fault?"
