Chapter 31: What a Good Show
A few Anbu were lurking around the new Uchiha clan territory.
They held telescopic equipment, closely monitoring every move made by the Uchiha, reporting back to the Third Hokage daily.
At that moment, the expression of a perceptive Anbu froze—someone had just swept the area with probing chakra.
He immediately signaled an emergency gesture, and several other Anbu quickly gathered.
"Go! We've been discovered!"
There was no time to ask how they'd been caught. They turned and made a run for it.
But—
"It's too late to leave now."
Kaien descended from the sky, landing a powerful whip kick that sent one Anbu flying.
"How is he this fast?!"
A chill ran down the spines of the remaining Anbu. Given the current fragile relationship between the Uchiha and the village, being caught like this could be disastrous.
Uchiha Kaien... he's the deputy clan head now. Can we even win against him?
The three Anbu stared at Kaien—then, in an instant, dropped to the ground as if struck by lightning.
Kaien shrugged casually.
"Newbies. Couldn't even resist one of my weaker genjutsu."
If it had been Shisui, they would've been taken down without even knowing it.
In truth, Kaien had misunderstood something. The Anbu had never had a direct conflict with the Uchiha before. At most, they'd been chased off. No one expected Kaien to attack outright.
Though Kaien's genjutsu wasn't especially refined, his Mangekyō Sharingan was overwhelmingly powerful.
In just moments, the Anbu were unconscious.
Just then, hurried footsteps echoed—the Uchiha patrol squad had arrived.
"Lock them up. We'll deal with them tomorrow."
"Understood!"
The Uchiha patrol squad was assigned to prevent unauthorised entries into the clan's territory.
But the Anbu usually kept their distance, making them hard to detect and even harder to deal with.
Seems we need to set up a barrier system too, Kaien thought. But first, let's give the Third Hokage a little warning.
Elsewhere...
"Hokage-sama, four of the Anbu monitoring the Uchiha clan are missing."
The Third Hokage's expression turned grim.
Previously, the Hokage had quietly stationed a few Anbu around the Uchiha area.
When the Uchiha showed no reaction, he grew bolder and sent more.
But now, the Uchiha had retaliated—during peace talks with Kumogakure, no less.
What is the Uchiha clan planning?
That day also happened to be the birthday of Hinata, the eldest daughter of the Hyūga clan.
Out of gratitude for the Uchiha relinquishing power during the last incident, the Hyūga invited Fugaku and Kaien to attend.
Most assumed the Uchiha, having severed ties with the village, wouldn't show up.
To everyone's surprise, both Fugaku and Kaien arrived.
After the banquet, Fugaku stayed behind to chat with Hizashi, as the two had grown close.
Kaien, on the other hand, claimed boredom and excused himself for a walk.
He flickered away, heading toward the backyard of the Hyūga estate.
That was where Hinata's room was.
From a high vantage point, Kaien spotted a sneaky figure slip into her room.
Moments later, the intruder emerged, carrying an unconscious Hinata.
He had entered stealthily—but exited openly.
Naturally, he was caught almost immediately by Hiashi, who erupted with fury.
Hinata was the eldest daughter of the main family, and someone had dared to kidnap her inside the Hyūga estate?
Unforgivable.
Hiashi locked onto the intruder with his Byakugan and used high-speed techniques to intercept him.
The kidnapper dropped Hinata and charged at Hiashi.
Hiashi raised his Gentle Fist, ready to strike—but a shadow appeared beside him.
Enemy?!
Even Hiashi, with his enhanced vision, couldn't see clearly who it was.
The mysterious figure struck the intruder's throat cleanly—instant kill.
As the body dropped, Hiashi finally recognized the newcomer.
Uchiha Kaien.
"You're fast, Kaien. I didn't even see you move," Hiashi admitted, still stunned.
But Kaien shook his head, voice low.
"Lord Hiashi, there's no time to relax."
Kaien could already hear faint sounds outside the estate.
He quickly whispered something to Hiashi, who looked stunned—then nodded gravely.
Kaien disappeared again, fading into the shadows.
Now, only Shinichi Nagasaki's corpse remained, with Hiashi holding Hinata.
Heavy footsteps approached.
Several key members of the Kumogakure delegation entered—Bokuto, Killer Bee, and others.
The Third Hokage, Utane Koharu, and Mitokado Homura accompanied them.
Hiashi's heart sank.
Just as Kaien predicted...
Upon seeing Shinichi Nagasaki's lifeless body, the Kumogakure delegation's faces turned grim.
Yugito , the representative, rushed forward.
"Hyūga Hiashi! What is the meaning of this?! We came to celebrate your daughter's birthday. Why is Shinichi dead?!"
Hiashi's tone was cold and angry:
"Don't twist the facts. This man broke into my daughter's room and tried to kidnap her. I stopped him. That's all."
Yugito snapped back:
"Lies! We came here in peace. Shinichi was here to deliver gifts! And now he's dead?! Are you trying to provoke war?"
Hiashi remained silent, watching the wooden man's loud display.
Yugito turned to the Third Hokage:
"You saw everything! We came peacefully, and now we're treated like this? Is this how you treat guests from Kumogakure?"
The Third Hokage's face was dark—he knew this was a setup by Kumogakure.
But before he could speak, Murei Yuzora stepped forward, voice sharp:
"What do you say, Hokage-sama? If you're dissatisfied with us, just say so. Was it you who ordered Shinichi's death?"
Accusations aimed directly at him.
Hiashi glared at the Third Hokage.
He needs to speak up…
Yugito pressed harder:
"For the sake of peace, the one responsible must be punished! If not—we, Kumogakure, will consider this an act of war!"
Beside him, Killer Bee released a surge of chakra.
Red-orange tailed beast chakra began to cloak his body.
The Third Hokage sighed deeply and looked at Hiashi.
"Hiashi… This matter concerns the Hyūga clan. You must take responsibility."
Koharu added coldly:
"Yes. Kumogakure came in good faith. You must resolve this peacefully."
Hiashi looked at the Hokage with disappointment.
Kaien was right. This Hokage… has no spine left.
By now, Fugaku and Hizashi had arrived.
They'd been informed of the situation by Hyūga clan members nearby.
Seeing his brother cornered, Hizashi stepped forward—but was interrupted.
A slow clap echoed through the air.
Kaien emerged from the shadows, wearing a faint smile.
"Well, well," he said.
"What a good show."
….
