Chapter 7 - Job Discussion

'The old David didn't just kill himself. He also lost his job, the week earlier? What a bum.' David thought as he began to look through the memories of the old David.

'Maybe something had influenced him to make that? The Bystander-Characteristic, maybe?'

'Did his personality change that much due to the corruption of the Beyonder Characteristic? I better make sure this doesn't happen to me.'

"I'll make sure to get a new one. Now, go showering. We can talk about that when we eat later. Don't you think?" David said to Theo while looking him into the eyes.

Theo was just one or two centimetres smaller than David. Therefore, they had basically no height difference. However, David's eyes were more mahogany coloured while Theo's had an eerie similarity to Donningsman, David noticed and lampooned in his mind.

'His addiction to Donningsman must be studied.'

"Yes, let's discuss that later." Theo passed David and went into the bathroom, before closing the door behind him.

'He has been acting differently from his normal behaviour. Last week, I could already see the craziness in his eyes, but there is no more in his eyes now. But he is definitely not the same person anymore, he was before coming into contact with the Beyonder Characteristic. I guess it is for the better though.'

Theo got naked and threw himself into the shower. While pondering about his friend's new behaviour.

Hot water dropped down Theo's face, he looked up in the shower without fear of the water dropping into his eyes.

'Well, it seems he still values friendship, so nothing much changed except him becoming from a depressed bum to someone who is willing to do his part. As long as he doesn't suddenly start bothering others, there shouldn't be a problem.'

Theo turned off the shower grabbed another towel from the cupboard. Rubbing it against every part of his body to make it dry from the water of the shower. Sighing out loud, he stopped thinking about his friend and turned to more important things.

'The last week my dear boss asked me to get a specific clock from one of the clothmakers in the area. I think its name was Kasper's and Charle's. He also gave me the money. An impressive amount of fifty pounds for the clock. Why doesn't he just go there himself? How annoying. I'll do that today.'

Looking into the mirror, he saw a very tired person. Not just physically, but also emotionally.

'That way he looked into my eyes was almost scary. I almost would have thought he knew everything about me by just one look and he isn't even a Beyonder. If he became a Beyonder, and his abilities would increase his skill to read other people. Oh dear god, he would be terrifying. I wouldn't be able to hide anything. Luckily, he seems to have a good core and doesn't want to harm the old David. He is no enemy." David walked through to the living room.

Looking into the room and seeing most items in the room replaced with Donningsman wood, he shuttered internally.

'It spreads like an infection his Donningsman addiction. Should I take care of that? Maybe I should secretly replace some of them with normal wood, but he would likely notice that. It would be for his best, though. I only think about our mental health.' David joked as he sat down on one of the dark, wooden chairs, which hadn't yet become a Donningsman chair, he smirked in clear determination. Even though he didn't feel so good currently.

Robbed from his sleep by dream-walking doesn't feel nice. Imagine wanting to sleep, but all one can do is feel the tiredness and close your eyes in the best hopes it stops. That could have definitely counted as a new torture method in the world David came from.

Looking out of the window, which makes view into the bustling streets of Backlund, David felt somewhat thrilled. He didn't know where he was, which year it would be on Earth or anything about Earth. Nothing that his old identity there defined was important here. He is no one.

He could become anyone he wanted. A butler, a thief or maybe just be a...Bystander. Someone who watches everything unfold in front of him without regard for it as he is the one who just watches.

David felt like something clicked inside of him, but he wasn't really sure what it was. It felt like his innermost essence reacted to his thoughts.

Chuckling at the weird thought, David put his face into his right hand, which was on his knees. The expression in his eyes unreadable even for himself, but it felt like fascination. He was absolutely astonished by this world full of Beyonders, monsters and ancient beings.

"In which beautifully weird world am I?" David spoke to himself in a tone, which seemed similar to craziness, but was also quite far from it. The nearest association would be a mix between amusement and fascination. His heart pounding strongly in his chest.

Calming himself down, David began breathing easier and put a simple smile on his face.

'I want to find out about everything. Especially Beyonders. They seem really interesting.' David thought while looking up at the table again.

He should eat something nice. 'Do they have local specialties here? They must have some.' David was delighted thinking about that while beginning to look for eatable things in the kitchen.

But his hopes got turned down pretty quickly as he found some pretty normal food there.

Plain white bread and some beef. David looked at with a deadpan stare as if the food maybe could still transform into something special, but nothing changed. Even though he looked for over 5 minutes.

"You seem disappointed, but normally we never eat in the morning. We never had, don't you remember?' Theo said while leaning himself at the table and observing David.

'Don't mess this up, David.' He thought to himself as he turned his face to Theo.

"Naturally, I know. It is just that since I've become a Beyonder, I began to remember some things from my childhood and looked out of reflex into it. I don't want to talk too much about it.

Theo slightly surprised, kept quiet and stopped observing his friend.

"However, we could go to a cafe in the area. That's where I normally eat. My treat. But you'll play me back once you get your new job." Theo stated with a neutral face while he let his gaze wander around the room.
