Chapter 8 - East Borough

Surprise showed itself on David's face. He didn't expect that stoic, a bit too perfect, friend of his to actually invite him to breakfast.

Not wanting to go without a proper meal in the morning, David agreed to his friend's invitation. As for which cafe Theo was talking about, David didn't really care, as he was starving.

'The food can't be so bad when he says it's where he normally eats.'

"Thank you. That would be nice. " A smile appeared on David's face, who appeared genuinely happy in Theo's eyes.

Theo, noticing the smile, couldn't help but let out a small chuckle.

'So, he is starving.' He thought to himself, confirming it.

"Then, let's go there and don't forget your key, because I'll not be at home all the time."

"I had a key?" David blurted out in surprise and Theo sighed half in annoyance, half in acceptance.

He walked to the cabinet and took out a brand new key. The key gleamed lustrous in the shine of the gas lamps, which enlightened the entire room alone.

"Just for your reminder. There is just one key remaining in the cabinet for emergencies. Don't lose this one." Theo reminded David, who wasn't effectively paying attention.

'He seems to be quite serious about me losing the keys. Was the last David really that forgetting as to forget his keys? That would never happen to me,' David murmured to himself as he received the key Theo held in his hand just moments ago.

"Don't worry, I don't plan on losing it." David reassured Theo, who had a very skeptical look on his face. He looked at David with one eyebrow raised.

Theo didn't believe him at all, because the last David had once lost over ten keys in one week. Theo still couldn't fathom how someone could do that. No Beyonder powers his friend now have, could help him with that.

After some careful consideration and doubts, Theo decided not to say anymore about the key and just continued with what they wanted to do.

"Well, are you ready? Then let's go, now."

"Yes, we can go. I have either way not really much to do, currently."

They swiftly put on the shoes and shut the wooden door when they were outside. The door closed itself with a loud 'clack' sound, which was very relaxing.

Feeling the change in atmosphere, David put up a more neutral face, which didn't show many emotions. They were in the most dangerous borough in Backlund. The East Borough.

They shouldn't just show everyone that they were easy to rob.

The weather was mild and cloudy. Very cloudy. It was almost like the sky was as grey as the houses, which lined up beside each other on the street.

The last rain was yesterday, when David transmigrated into this body, who lived a sad life with dead parents in an area, which could be called a 'ghetto'. Or maybe it was even worse. David didn't want to find out.

It was around seven thirty in the morning. Many people were on their way to work or were looking for work in the bustling streets of Backlund.

They didn't receive many looks as Theo and David strived along the streets, staying on the sidewalk, which looked gray and empty.

The whole area was a painting of sadness. The faces of the people were silent and emotionally impenetrable.

'They look unhappy. It somehow hurts me to see them this way. This life is not comparable to the one I've lived on Earth. The people there were so much happier in my memory.' David let his gaze wander from person to person. He felt that between each person was at least a kilometer of emotional distance.

Some people looked back, but said nothing to him. They just stared back with an empty gaze until David felt uncomfortable and turned his head away.

One older man even screamed at him. His voice was drunkenly thick with alcohol. His dark gray beard, which went to his shoulders, made him look even older.

"What are you staring at, huh? Now, put away that face of yours. Or I will make you do that personally! "

This ripped David out of this state of momentary sadness and turned his gaze to the ground before him. David's face was a mix of emotions he couldn't describe.

Theo noticed this and questioned himself about what was going on with David again.

"I am sorry. My friend here just had a terrible day. No need to be angry. He already is very sorry." Theo answered the old man, who still looked angry and drunk.

"He better be," answered that man and turned away from them. He grunted and started talking to the person right next to him.

David, who was still overwhelmed by the response, regained his composure and thanked Theo for helping him, but he just winked it off with a movement of his hand.

"There it is. The cafe I was talking about." Theo pointed to the cafe at the corner of the street.

At the corner of said street, was a little building. It had some windows, which showed a warm atmosphere inside. It also stood out compared to the colorless area around them.

The walls were painted green and looked just like the lawn.

Many people had been sitting on the chairs just now, but they needed to go now to their workplace. Therefore, now was the best time for them to go there.

Luckily, David and Theo didn't have any duties for the time being.

Theo, because he was part of a gang and got paid for it. David, because he didn't have a job. Many people didn't have either the time or the money to be there now.

Sitting down on two chairs, David and Theo looked around and began waiting for a server to come to them.

"I understand why you like it here. It is a peaceful zone, outside of the silent chaos radiating from the people," David commented, while stretching himself to get the last bit of sleepiness away.

Theo kept quiet and only nicked into his direction, signaling him to just be silent, even though he agreed to it.

David, understanding the sign, inspected the area they were in. The name of the street was the "White Hand Street". A very bizarre name, like David thought.

'Who would come up with such a street name?' David lampooned internally.

As the name for the cafe was the "Silent Umbrella".

Just then did David notice the white tarpaulin above his head. 'Because of the tarpaulin. Now that makes sense.' He tipped himself slightly against his head.

After most of the people have left the cafe, it fell into an eerie silence, which David had never experienced before.

'Maybe I have overlooked something. A notice or so?' Looking around, David first found nothing, but after the second look, he was successful.

There was a sign at the entrance of the cafe. It had a white background with black writing on it.

No speaking unless the servers are asking you what you want to drink or eat.

'Well, that is definitely a unique custom. And I'll enjoy it very much. Every time I was in a restaurant, it was loud when many people were there. Especially kids, who couldn't appreciate the silence.' Reminiscing about his time on Earth, David felt happiness flow through him.

He closed his eyes and sorted all what happened until now, in order to realize what actually has been going on the entire last night.

His transmigration, the weird dream, which absolutely didn't feel like a dream, and that he was now a part of that world as one of the magical beings.
