Episode 25: The Fall of Ghost Net
---
Rain poured from the heavens as the skies above the tower roared with incoming aircraft. Julian narrowed his eyes, the wind tugging at his coat as he stared down the approaching Nexus assault team.
"Eve," he said without turning, "how much time do we have before they shut the signal down?"
"Less than five minutes," she called from behind the console, her fingers flying across the controls. "They're flooding the satellite bands with interference. We need a direct line to the east grid, or the rest of the world goes dark again."
Julian cursed under his breath. "We need to buy time."
Reese appeared beside him, shotgun in hand, bruised but grinning. "You thinking what I'm thinking?"
Julian nodded. "Hold the roof. Buy Eve her five minutes."
Reese loaded shells into his weapon. "Let's make them bleed."
---
Below, black-clad Ghost Net operatives rappelled from helicopters and swarmed the lower levels of the comms tower. Lightning forked across the sky as boots splashed through puddles, weapons raised, infrared scanning for movement.
Then the lights cut. Total blackout.
And from the shadows, D7 struck.
Lyra appeared in a flicker of light, moving through corridors like a ghost. A flick of her hand, and the elevator locks froze. Surveillance glitched. Nexus soldiers opened fire on empty air, only to be met by Julian's blade from behind.
Blood and steel danced in silence.
---
Eve stared at the console, heart pounding. The signal was weakening. She slammed her hand on the screen. "Come on…"
Then, a flicker. A secondary channel opened.
Her eyes widened. "Max… you rerouted a backdoor."
She typed faster. "I see you, old friend."
The signal shot up again, punching through Nexus interference.
Around the world, the truth spread deeper, faster—this time unstoppable.
---
On the rooftop, Reese and Julian fought back-to-back. Bullets rained like hellfire. Reese took one to the arm but didn't stop swinging.
"More coming!" he shouted.
Julian slashed through another soldier. "Fall back to the antenna base!"
The rooftop door burst open—Lucian stepped through, in full tactical gear, flanked by two elite Valkyrie guards.
Julian turned, blood-stained and breathing hard. "Lucian."
Lucian raised a sleek, jet-black rifle. "You've been a thorn for too long, Julian. You should've stayed in the dark."
Julian smiled coldly. "You should've killed me when you had the chance."
---
They clashed. Blades rang. Gunfire echoed. Lightning illuminated the chaos.
Lucian was fast—enhanced. Every strike was brutal, every move calculated. But Julian had something Lucian didn't: purpose.
Below, Eve's console flashed green. Upload complete. Backup distributed globally.
"It's done," she whispered.
Lyra entered the chamber, bleeding from the temple, barely standing. "They need help up top."
Eve nodded and grabbed her pistol. "Let's end this."
---
On the rooftop, Julian was on the ground, bloodied, Lucian's boot pressed to his chest. "You fought well," Lucian sneered. "But this ends with you."
A gunshot cracked.
Lucian froze. A red dot bloomed in the center of his forehead.
He collapsed.
Eve lowered the smoking pistol, eyes locked on Julian. "Told you I've got your back."
Julian sat up, coughing. "Remind me to never doubt that again."
The Valkyrie guards fled as helicopters pulled away, retreating. Nexus command was gone. The control tower stood in the rain—damaged, but victorious.
---
At sunrise, the world woke to a new reality. The truth was everywhere. Protests erupted. Hidden regimes collapsed. Nexus was exposed, and the people rose.
At the edge of the city, the D7 team gathered in a quiet alley behind an old train station.
Julian held the cracked data core in his hands. "This was more than just a heist. It was a reckoning."
Reese lit a cigar. "What now?"
Eve smiled faintly. "Now… we rebuild."
Julian turned to them, resolve in his eyes. "D7 isn't finished. We just started a war. And the world's watching."
